By Kathryn Quinn, Junior, Alternative Breaks Coordinator, Volunteer Resource Center In light of the recent hurricane that has taken its toll on the East Coast, the SM调教所-Boulder Volunteer Resource Center is hoping to step in as a voice to raise awareness about helping those impacted to get back on their feet.

The SM调教所 enrolled more international students during the 2011-12 academic year and sent more students abroad during the 2010-11 academic year than any other higher education institution in Colorado. The data, released today by the Institute of International Education in its annual Open Doors Report, shows that SM调教所-Boulder was home to 1,681 international students during the 2011-12 school year. SM调教所-Boulder sent 1,316 students overseas during the 2010-11 school year.

The SM调教所 will honor the nation鈥檚 veterans, including SM调教所-Boulder鈥檚 own faculty, staff and student veterans, through Veterans Week, beginning with a Nov. 9 Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. in the University Memorial Center鈥檚 Glenn Miller Ballroom. The free, public ceremony will feature guest speaker Michael Dakduk, executive director of the national organization Student Veterans of America. A reception will follow in the UMC Veterans Lounge.

A new startup company that sprang from the SM调教所 this year is a Grand Challenges Exploration winner, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Psychology and neurosciences department Associate Professor Don Cooper, co-founder and chief science officer of Mobile Assay Inc. of Boulder who developed the technology in his laboratory at SM调教所鈥檚 Institute for Behavioral Genetics, will pursue an innovative global health and development research project titled 鈥淎 Lab on Mobile Device Platform for Seed Testing.鈥�

Have you been 鈥淏ack to Boulder?鈥� It鈥檚 a question being posed by the SM调教所 Alumni Association to its family of more than 250,000 students and alumni. Alumni, current students, faculty, staff and community members will find a broad slate of activities for the 2012 Homecoming weekend starting Thursday, Nov. 1. Michael Brown, one of the world鈥檚 most accomplished adventure filmmakers and a SM调教所-Boulder alumnus, will share his story during his talk 鈥淏eyond the Summit鈥� at the Back to Boulder Luncheon. The luncheon, to be held Friday, Nov. 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom, is free for all SM调教所-Boulder students.
