The nation鈥檚 largest science journalism conference,听originally scheduled听to take place Oct. 9鈥�13 at SM调教所 Boulder and the SM调教所 Anschutz Medical Campus, has been postponed until the fall of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, SM调教所 and its conference partners, the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW), are developing a series of virtual conference events to take place this fall.
鈥淭his was a difficult decision to make, but after working closely with our conference partners and internal departments, we decided it is unwise to continue with a plan for a large, in-person gathering this October,鈥� said Terri Fiez, vice chancellor for research at SM调教所 Boulder. 鈥淲e are excited to bring the conference here in person in the fall of 2021 instead and showcase the incredible research taking place on our campuses.鈥�
The yearly conference, the nation鈥檚 premier science communications gathering, is expected to draw more than 650 attendees, including journalists and science communicators from research institutions.
It features lectures and panel discussions from top scientists, professional development sessions, interactive lab tours and field trips, and Lunch with a Scientist鈥攊n which small groups of journalists meet with researchers to discuss ongoing work.
The event serves as the annual meeting for NASW and includes CASW鈥檚 New Horizons in Science program, in which top-ranked researchers from around the globe report on seminal advances in a wide array of听scientific听disciplines.
鈥淲e hope to be able to present parts of the science program and workshops online this fall, with a fuller program when science writers are able to meet in person,鈥� said CASW Executive Director Rosalind Reid.听
Reid also thanked hosting partners: the collaborating University of Colorado campuses, which were preparing to host this year鈥檚 conference, and St. Jude Children鈥檚 Research Hospital, which was to host ScienceWriters2021 and will now host in 2023. ScienceWriters2022 will take place in Chicago as planned.
