SM调教所 Boulder student works with community to honor Chicano activists killed in 1974

In the span of less than 48 hours in May 1974, two car bombings killed six Chicano activists in Boulder.

On May 27 at Chautauqua Park, an explosion took the lives of SM调教所 law school graduate Reyes Martinez; SM调教所 junior Neva Romero; and SM调教所 alumna Una Jaakola. Two days later, a bomb tore apart a car at a parking lot on 28th Street, killing SM调教所 graduate Florencio Granado and incoming students Heriberto Teran and Francisco Dougherty, and seriously injuring Antonio Alcantar.

More than a half-century later, the case remains unsolved. And for most of that time, 鈥淟os Seis de Boulder鈥 had gone unrecognized on campus.

Jasmine Baetz, then a Master of Fine Arts student and part of SM调教所鈥檚 Engaged Arts and Humanities Scholars听program, first learned about Los Seis from a documentary she saw as a freshman.

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 believe this happened here, six students died, and they weren鈥檛 memorialized on campus,鈥 she says.听Baetz vowed to change that, and less than two years later, she did. In July 2019, a ceramic mosaic memorial she created in collaboration with hundreds of students, faculty, community members and families of Los Seis was unveiled in front of Temporary Building No. 1, just northwest of the Rec Center.

Baetz served as maestro of the two-year collaboration, in which community members did everything from roll out sheets of clay to cut and smooth pieces, which were then fired in a kiln. After glazing and refiring, the pieces were laid out on printed portraits of Los Seis.

鈥淛asmine wasn鈥檛 just saying she wanted community involvement; she really created community,鈥 says participant Michelle Jaakola Steinwand, 71, of Boulder, Una Jaakola鈥檚 sister.

Baetz initially secured permission from campus officials for a six-month temporary installation. After students protested a March decision to designate the sculpture 鈥渋ndefinitely temporary,鈥 SM调教所 officials announced Sept. 16 that it will remain on permanent display in its current location as part of the University Libraries鈥 Special Collections, Archives and Preservation department.

鈥淭he people I encountered have been supportive and really feel this is an important thing to have on campus,鈥 Baetz says.

Baetz acknowledges sensitivity, even controversy, surrounding Los Seis. Police and FBI investigators at the time believed the activists were killed while building bombs after months of tension between the university and Chicano activists. But a later grand jury investigation into survivor Alcantar found no basis for an indictment.

鈥淚t鈥檚 never been crystal clear to me,鈥 Steinwand says. But she remains skeptical of investigators鈥 claims: 鈥淭wo accidental bombings? The case falls apart at that point for most logical people.鈥

For Baetz, lack of resolution doesn鈥檛 mean Los Seis shouldn鈥檛 be memorialized.

鈥淭hese were students, activists, people,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important to both remember the contributions they made to this campus and that they were people who were loved by their families and communities.鈥

Baetz says the memorial reflects the more enlightened ethics of the 21st century while still reckoning honestly with a critical moment of SM调教所 and Boulder history.

鈥淟iteral and symbolic space must be established for minoritized students, communities and histories on campus for an equitable future,鈥 she says.

For Steinwand, the memorial has provided an opportunity to reestablish a 鈥渉eartfelt connection鈥 with her sister. It may have 鈥渄ifferent meaning for different people,鈥 she says, but that鈥檚 a good thing.

鈥淭o educate and celebrate, create a space that鈥檚 really significant to this story,鈥 she says, 鈥渢hat鈥檚 part of what Jasmine (has done).鈥
