Film Permit Information

The University of Colorado office of Risk Management and the City of Boulder require student filmmakers to comply with safety and security regulations. Students planning to film or videotape on the University of Colorado Campus, buildings, residence halls, or other university dependencies must fill out the necessary application and await approval before setting up cameras, equipment, crew or actors on campus property. Besides permits, you may need to contract and/or purchase insurance.

Make sure that you have discussed with your instructors these requirements and that you plan your shoot to observe all required measures and regulations.

 

WEAPONS POLICY and HIGH RISK 

The use of weapons on a film set, real or fake, is a danger to the cast, crew, and community. Students may never use real guns in any assignment. If you plan on using a prop gun (fake, toy, replica etc) you have to follow the weapons policy to ensure safety.

 

  1. Banned Items - No firearm may be used that is capable of firing projectiles in any form. There will be no use of blanks, caps, or any other explosive device. Any and all gunshots must be accomplished through the use of sound effects.

  2. No weapon will be allowed that is capable of firing a projectile, such as a bow and arrow or crossbow. All such weapons must be incapable of firing and used for visual effect only.

  3. In order to use a prop gun (including toy guns, rubber guns, fake guns, non-firing) the student must submit the following to the Cinema Studies office to review: 

    1. SMµ÷½ÌËù Boulder campus . 

    2. Written permission from the (1.) CINE Undergraduate Production chair and (2) their Professor

    3. If on campus, written permission from the Campus Police -  may require that the production team pay for a police presence at filming locations.

    4. If off campus (including private property), written permission from the police department in the proper jurisdiction. This may require that the production team pay for a police presence at filming locations. This is required even on private property

    5. A permit for the shooting location 

    6. For on- and off-campus use, students must obtain a grip stand and display a ‘PROP WEAPONS IN USE’ card. The grip stand and card must be positioned at the location so that any arriving persons, police, or fire department personnel can clearly see it

The University of Colorado does offer some insurance coverage through . For film shoots, Risk Management will provide a proof of liability form for off campus sites that request proof of liability.
