SM������

The Bachelor’s-Accelerated Master's (BAM) degree program in Japanese recognizes the need for master’s-level training upon entering the job market in a variety of sectors that call for highly advanced proficiency in the Japanese language, knowledge of the culture of Japan and its literature, and the skills acquired by BA and MA graduates in the humanities: research, analysis, interpretation, translation and communication.

This degree offers a challenging and focused academic experience for exceptional students (particularly those who enter the university with significant preparation in Japanese studies from high school or with other backgrounds, or those who participate in study abroad opportunities at SM������)��who demonstrate the ability to express their ideas clearly, both orally and in written form, using standard English. Highly motivated students who are accepted into the program begin graduate work no later than the senior year and earn both the BA and MA in five years.

Admission Requirements

In order to gain admission to the BAM program named above, a student must meet the following criteria:

• Current SM������ Boulder Undergraduate Student
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher for all courses taken at SM������ Boulder
• Transfer students must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours at SM������ Boulder

Application Process

Students must submit the following materials by September 1 of their junior year (or, in exceptional circumstances, during the student's senior year) to the Director of Graduate Studies in Japanese.��Applications will be reviewed by the Japanese graduate faculty.��Students interested in applying for this option must consult with the department's Undergraduate Academic Advisor��early in their career at SM������ to establish their program of study.

• Statement of purpose (ca. 800 words) - Please submit it along with the Intent Application.

Your Statement of Purpose should highlight your expertise and research interests, and explain why you think our program would be a good match for your research interests.

• Writing sample�� (ca. 10.000 words) - Please submit it along with the Intent Application.

Your writing sample should demonstrate your approach to a text or cultural phenomenon that you explore, as well as your ability to create a convincing argument. The writing sample does not need to pertain to your current research interests.

• Three letters of recommendation (at least one from a full-time member of the Japanese��faculty)

Program Requirements

Students are required to fulfill separately all requirements for the B.A. in Japanese and M.A. in Japanese, with the exception that 6 credits of coursework can satisfy requirements for both the B.A. and the M.A. Selection of the overlap courses should be made in consultation with the director of graduate studies in Japanese.

Bachelor’s Degree Award

BAM students must apply online to graduate with their bachelor’s degree for the semester in which degree requirements will be completed, and ��to identify which courses you're double counting and which you're using toward the master's degree.

Deadlines to apply to graduate:

• February 1st (students graduating in May)
• March 1st (students graduating in August)
• October 1st (students graduating in December)

These dates ensure that students can register along with continuing graduate students. However, applications will be accepted until the end of the semester in which the student is graduating.

Students pursuing double degrees or additional majors/minors at the undergraduate level are subject to college/school/program policies. This may result in a student choosing to discontinue the additional undergraduate degree, major or minor, or delaying formal admission into the graduate portion of the BAM program in order to complete the additional degree, major, or minor, or fulfilling the remaining requirements for the additional undergraduate credentials while at graduate status (graduate tuition, enrollment status, etc). Students should discuss these options with their advisor.

Admission for Continuation to Master’s Program

During the final semester of enrollment for the baccalaureate degree, students must submit a . Students will be matriculated into the master’s program without additional departmental review, provided they meet the continuation requirement of 3.0 cumulative GPA. Students must meet the GPA requirement to be admitted; there is no provisional admission for the accelerated master’s degree.�� International students must have approval from International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) prior to matriculation.

Students must begin the master’s program within one academic year (three semesters, including summer, and depending on the graduate program), and must select their term of admission on the application.

Financial Information

Prior to completing the baccalaureate degree, students are assessed undergraduate tuition rates. Once admitted to the master’s program, students are assessed graduate tuition rates. (In-state graduate students are assessed resident graduate tuition, but do not receive COF.) In addition, graduate students receiving financial aid are considered “independent” and are no longer eligible for aid requiring undergraduate status.
